Dhaka records 80mm of rainfall in 3 hours, most streets underwater

Most streets in Bangladesh capital Dhaka went underwater on Tuesday morning due to heavy rainfall that began early Tuesday, causing huge traffic in different areas and suffering to the city dwellers.

Md Omar Faruq, a meteorologist at the Bangladesh Meteorological Department, told New Age that 80 millimeters of rainfall was recorded from 6:00am till 9:00am in Dhaka.

 

By 6:00 am on Tuesday, around 22mm of rainfall had been recorded, he added.

He mentioned that this amount of rainfall is typical for the monsoon season and that the rain might continue intermittently throughout the day.

Several residents reported that many streets, including Green Road, Karwan Bazar, Dhanmondi 27, Mirpur 6, Airport road, New Market and Basundhara went underwater, causing suffering to pedestrians and commuters, including school and office goers.

A resident of Bashundhara, named Razib, wrote on facebook gorup named Traffic Alert at about 8:15 am, ‘I could not drop my kid at school. Now going back home. It’s a mess here in Bashundhara.’

Several other netizens in the group reported heavy traffic in different areas, including 300 Feet Road, Bashundhara, Kalshi and ECB Chattar.
